Renewals, expiries and reapplications
Badges usually last up to 3 years. Renewal is not automatic: **you must reapply before
your current badge expires**, and GOV.UK warns that replacing a lost, stolen or damaged
badge is a separate service when expiry is more than 3 months away.
Renewing
Apply through the GOV.UK service (England, Scotland, Wales; Northern Ireland differs).
You'll need a recent head-and-shoulders digital photo, and your details as before. Your
council may re-check eligibility, so include current evidence — don't assume the last
award carries you through.
After a refusal
- Reconsideration — for information that was not taken into account (see our
[letter guide](/guides/reconsideration-letter/)).
- Reapplication — always open to you. There is no waiting ban, no fee beyond the
normal badge cost, and no penalty for trying again with better evidence.
Costs, by nation
| Nation | Badge cost |
|---|---|
| England | up to £10 |
| Scotland | £20 |
| Wales | free |
